No New-trophils Anywhere In Sight
Number of days since last chemo: 28
Number of days until incoming chemo: 10 (cell counts permitting)
Number of chemo treatments left: still 1
Level of tiredness: sky high

Yep that’s right, it’s still additional delay! The woman came discover yesterday morning to take my pre-chemo bloods, and I was rattling hopeful that my WBC calculate would have gone up sufficiently after an extra week. But the Chemo Suite phoned me in the salutation to feature it had actually gone down! It’s today 0.9, so that magic 1.5 target seems a long way off. Mind you, I feature I was hopeful that it would have gone up, but I haven’t felt some meliorate this week so it’s belike not that surprising. I did wonder whether it might have exclusive gone up a little bit, but I sure didn’t expect it to fall. It seems those GCSF injections rattling were a rank waste of time!

Because I still feel rattling dizzy and weak the additional delay is a comfort in many ways. It means that by the time I have my final treatment though, I’ll have had at least 2 months of delays over the instruction of the chemo, which is quite a lot really. Having said that, when I first started the chemo I predicted that it would finish in February, and it looks like I’m going to be right! My first instruction of chemo took 5 & 1/2 months to complete, and this digit is on track to be about 6 months, which is what I imagined. Blimey, 6 months - composition it down as a figure rattling brings it home just how long I’ve been having chemo for. When I think backwards to that first conference it does seem like a lifetime past though - it was summer, with warm, light evenings and the trees every still had leaves on them, a taste of a oppositeness to the grey, miserable day that I crapper wager discover of the window now!

By the time I start to get stronger again after the chemo finishes it’ll be reaching backwards into summer which will be bizarre, it’s like a whole assemblage will have been wiped out. From experience when I had my first instruction of chemo I know that when it finishes it feels like you’ve been in some sort of time warp. It makes it quite hard to modify because, while you feel like you’ve gone backwards to where you were before it every started, everyone else’s lives have of instruction moved on. It crapper make it difficult to try and fit backwards in with things again, especially when you feel push that everyone expects you to be ecstatically happy that you’re getting backwards to connatural again, and you just feel discover of locate in the “normal” world. Because there is no getting absent from it, having cancer, especially when you’re teen and don’t rattling know anyone else your geezerhood who has been ill too, does make you feel segregated. The cancer information benevolence Cancerbackup actually has a great country on ‘Life after Treatment’ on it’s <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Resourcessupport/Practicalissues/Lifeaftercancer/Aftertreatment"target="_blank">website which explains rattling well the kind of feelings you crapper get erst your treatment is over. I have to feature I didn’t have the rattling depressed, provoked emotions that it describes the first time around though, and I sure hope I won’t have them this time either.

Still, to be thinking about life after chemo is jumping the gun slighty considering my final dose is still a way soured yet. Right today I requirement to centre on resting lots, and keeping my fingers decussate that my neutrophils and white cells get multiplying over the incoming 10 days so I don’t get some further delays…

Em

The Chemotherapy Process
Number of steps to the chemotherapy process: 13
Number of hours it takes to rank them: 6+

I’m halfway through my treatment today and have cursive lots about how I feel after I’ve had chemo, but not still actually got around to composition about how it is administered. Well, today I’m going to cure that…

The day of chemo ever starts early, just because the treatment takes such a long time, so I have to be at hospital by 9am which means leaving the house about 8am to get there. Once I’m at the Cancer Centre, where the chemo suite is located, then I get movement in a comfy lead and get digit of my arms, whichever seems most likely to display a viable vein, enwrapped in an electric heat aggrandize for about 1/2 hour. As I mentioned in my last entry, this is done to dilate your veins and to help make them easier to find and cannulate. The actualised impact of cannulisation crapper take anything from a few minutes, to 1/2 hour if they struggle to find a vein, as they did with me last time around. So by this stage it’s usually between about 9:30-10am, and the impact of existence given the drugs hasn’t even started.

Once the cannula is in you are hooked up to a pump, which the tube in your limb is fed through before existence hooked up to the drugs at the added end. This is done so that the viscus crapper curb the flow of the drugs, and also so that the nurses crapper go absent and leave you, because when the activity of the drug runs discover the viscus beeps and the nurses are alerted to the fact they requirement to modify it. Then, before some drugs are separate through, and also after each drug had finished, a activity of salt is flushed through the vein to keep it open, and to ensure hour of the drugs rest clinging to the vein wall. After this initial salt flush, you obtain your pre-meds. In my housing these are two anti-sickness drugs, and two antihistamine drugs which are given to conflict some hypersensitised reation to the taxol. Once these have gone through it is finally time to be given the chemo drugs. First is taxol, which has to be given tardily and takes 3 hours to separate through, then it’s the carboplatin, which in oppositeness has to be separate through apace and so exclusive takes around an hour.

So, the whole impact of the chemo existence administered, erst the cannula is in, goes like this:

Saline
Dexamethasone (a steroid anti-sickness)
Saline
Piriton (antihistamine)
Saline
Tagamet (an antihistamine that controls acid reflux)
Saline
Ondansetron (anti-sickness)
Saline
Taxol
Saline
Carboplatin
Saline

Pre-meds: total time taken = 1 & 1/2 hours
Taxol: total time taken = 3 & 1/2 hours
Carboplatin: total time taken = 1+ hours

Once every that is done it is around 4pm, and I finally get backwards home around 5pm, 9 hours after environment out. As you crapper imagine, even though I spend the whole day movement in a chair, it is a rattling tiring process. The drugs themselves start to change you quite apace too and make you quite drowsy, specially the piriton which ofttimes sends me to rest for about 1/2 hour after I’ve had it. Still, the good thing is that I exclusive have to go through it every additional 3 times. I crapper sure feature I’m not going to miss it erst it’s over!

Em

Watching TV crapper make you sick: so what else is new?
TV viewers from around the concern who, like me, find each newborn wave of chintzily produced TV shows increasingly nauseating, will be pleased to learn that a European investigate team has today discovered that medical programs crapper make you sick, too.

According to Dr Jan Van Mierlo, of Hasselt University, Belgium, “specifically, fear of illness increased with geezerhood and girls were more afeard of illness than boys. We questioned adolescents who, in general, had no individualized experience of hospitals and doctors and are likely to have learned a lot through TV. It’s a subliminal relationship, something you take with you from these programmes.”

For the full article on the UK’s Daily Mail, click here.

So - what ailments could added TV progs induce?

I can’t rattling speak much about North dweller TV as I live most of the assemblage in the UK, but let me speculate for a moment.

House - depression, supressed anger, actuation the wings soured live flies

Strictly Come Dancing (or US equivalent) - dropped arches and bunions on both feet

Talent shows in general - nonindulgent tinnitis in both ears

Gardening programmes - gang-green (oh, sorry)

Home makeovers - housemaid’s knee (sorry again)

Sports - tennis elbow (not sorry some more)

Beauty makeovers - Bell’s Palsy (of the face)

Political documentaries - accent psychosis

OK, over to you now

How many more TV attendant illnesses crapper we become up with? Post your ideas as comments on here. Or email them to me, suze at suzanstmaur dot com, and I’ll place them for you.

No budget for champagne I’m afeard but a big, bounteous smile and cyber-hug will go to the communicator of the funniest responses.

All for now…

SUZE

Talking of sac cancer, did I ever tell you about…
…a few eld past when I was the writer/interviewer on a video creation about the male urinary tract?

Anyway … as sac cancer and its somewhat eye-squinting treatment is today backwards on my mind after a welcome break, here’s a story that should alter a smile to the lips of most women and a tear to the eye of most men.

Once upon a time I was scriptwriter and interviewer on a video creation sponsored by a caregiver consort to encourage its creation which was an mirky medium used in a impact titled videocystourethrography. Sounds good? Means it was something injected into you which showed up on an X-ray, so that video cameras could track your wee-wee as it exited your body.

On the day afraid we had a subject who was willing to be shown on the information - an elderly man. For reasons prizewinning known to the wallahs this elderly man required not one, not two but three catheters to be inserted up him; two up his willy and digit up his backwards passage.

By the time we got to the insertion of catheter sort two, our director - a gallant teen man - was on the saucer of unconsciousness. “Suze,” he gasped while fighting to stay aware, “I can’t manage with this. You’ll have to direct it.”

Well, I’m not sure how many grouping in exhibit playing have experienced their directorial debuts by default, but I sure did. With a slightly preoccupied Suze in bidding we effort the environs in digit take and bang, it was “in the can.”

Sadly so was the director, but in an entirely different metaphorical “can” … that of the lavatorial kind. Poor guy. Let’s hope he never needs to have his sac examined …

NTU discovery may help cardiovascular, cancer experiments
A investigate team at National Taiwan University (NTU) has discovered a gene that curbs liver cancer metastasis and added that triggers thrombosis arteria disease, the team’s instructor said yesterday.

Lin Shu-hua (林淑華), a academic at the university’s Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and Medical Biotechnology, said her investigate team’s discovery came from experiments with the “knockout mouse” technique, which uses a mouse that has had the function of digit or more of its genes deleted or made non-functional, to study the correlations of genes and diseases.

LIVER CANCER

Lin said the team’s discovery would help in developing newborn medicine and designing clinical experiments for liver cancer and cardiovascular disease.

She said that the X gene — digit of the two genes isolated — helps curb liver cancer metastasis. Her team implanted liver cancer cells in mice, knocked discover their X genes and observed metastasis and tumor clusters on them in the experiment.

The discovery might be helpful in improving the effects of liver cancer treatment if the reciprocity between the disease and the gene, which Lin described as “a guard” protecting the liver, is established through further experiments, she said.

In addition, the team found that the thromboxane A2 gene, or TXA2, causes thrombosis arteria narrowing. The team’s experiment knocked discover that gene from mice, fed them high cholesterin food and found the proportionality of thrombosis arteria narrowing declined.

The team performed cardiac catheterization dealings on the aforementioned mice and found that murder vessel damage was thin after the operations.

Lin said patients who obtain cardiovascular stent dealings usually have a 50 proportionality venture of suffering thrombosis arteria narrowing following the operation.

LOWER CHANCES

The discovery assumes that medicine that curbs the TXA3 gene would lower the chances of getting cardiovascular disease, Lin said.

The knockout mouse technique has the greatest possibleness in the field.

Three scientists were awarded the philanthropist Prize for Medicine last assemblage for producing the first knockout mice. jazzman Smithies, digit of the scientists, was Lin’s instructor.

That anxiety feeling…
Ah well, it’s backwards on the cancer treatment treadmill for Suze.

A past “poke and peek” (bladder cancer jargon for a flexible cystoscopy) revealed some inflamed patches on the sac lining and lo and behold, it’s carcinoma in situ time.

Now before you start thinking my funeral, get this. The intense programme about sac cancer is that it recurs 80 proportionality of the time, many times. The good programme is that it crapper be treated repeatedly for a long, long time, and if every else fails the sac crapper be distant and I would then go wee-wees into a little “ostomy” bag.

Despite that knowledge over the last 24 hours since I conventional the programme I’ve been feeling a taste down. However my significance of humour was alive today when I conventional this wonderful gag…

An elderly pair were discussing this and that, when the husband said, “whatever happened to our sexed relations?”

“Do you know,” replied his wife, “I don’t even think we got a Christmastime bill from them this year.”

At the height of the blazonry race, the Americans and Russians realised that, if they continued, before long they would finish up by destroying the world. So they discussed the issue at a top info summit meeting and decided to resolve the whole discussion with a dogfight.

The negotiators united that each land would take five eld to develop the prizewinning fighting dog they could. The winning dog would earn its land the correct to conception the world. The losing land would have to lay down its arms.

The Russians found the biggest, fiercest Dobermans and Rottweilers in every of the Soviet Union. They cross-bred them and then decussate their brute with the fiercest Slavonic wolves. They designated exclusive the biggest, strongest younker from the final litter, distant every the another puppies and left the lone dog to grow strong and large. They used steroids and demanding training in enmity and ruthless killing power. Finally when the five eld were up, they had a dog that oozed remove from every pore and had to be checked in detain made from steel girders. Only the trainers could handle this beast, and even they had to exercise extreme caution.

When the day of the final fight dawned, the Americans arrived with a freakish animal. It was a nine-foot-long Basset Hound. The Russians pitied the Americans. None of them thought this weird dog stood a quantity against the growling monster in the Slavonic cage. Bookies around the concern lay very brief ratio on the Russians winning in a matter of seconds.

The cages were unsealed and the dogs released. The Basset Hound waddled towards the middle of the ring. The Slavonic dog leapt from his detain and live the giant sausage-dog.

The moment the two dogs met, the Basset Hound unsealed its jaws and exhausted the Slavonic monster in digit mouthful. There was null left but a few tufts of fur from the Slavonic dog’s tail.

The Russians walked over to the Americans, blooming their eyes in disbelief. “We cannot comprehend. Our foremost scientists and trainers laboured for five eld with the strongest, fiercest Dobermans, Rottweilers and Slavonic wolves. They created a killing machine.”

“You don’t say,” the Americans replied. “Well, we got our foremost aesthetical surgeons labouring for five eld to make a crocodile look like a Basset Hound.”
